Lokene was welcomed to the Rio family in the middle of the 2019 club season after spending the previous year coaching Beach Volleyball at A5. During the 2019 season he assisted or substitute coached nearly every Rio team, culminating with a trip to Nationals with Rafa’s 15-1 team. This summer, Lokene traveled across the country coaching Elite & Skills camps at various universities, and completed the summer season with the honor of coaching with USA Volleyball’s Future Select Boys team.

Prior to moving to Atlanta, he spent 18 years in South Carolina coaching volleyball at many different levels from grade school to NCAA and even a couple of stints at the Professional level, most notably 15 years with SC Midlands (SC Jrs) coaching both girls and boys, the USC Mens & Womens Club teams, South Carolina State University, Cardinal Newman and the inaugural season of the Virginia Vibe men’s team. Along the way, he was fortunate enough to mentor and be mentored by numerous volleyball coaches from many different styles and systems, many from different countries.

Before moving to South Carolina, Lokene coached for 14 years in his native Hawai’i. After playing for the University of Redlands Club team, he returned home and was blessed to be able to play and coach club volleyball under Volleyball Hall of Famers Jon Stanley & Pedro Velasco. He also began coaching high school volleyball at Maryknoll (boys) and Sacred Hearts (girls). In his first season head coaching, his teams won the State Small School Championships for both the Girls and Boys divisions. He was then given the opportunity to return to his alma mater, the Kamehameha Schools to coach and was lucky to be mentored by a few more Hall of Famers including Tita Ahuna & Dave Shoji. He later volunteer assisted at Chaminade & Hawai’i Pacific Universities. Despite being privileged enough to have coached numerous college, professional and national team athletes, Lokene finds his greatest satisfaction just catching up with former athletes who have gone on to become strong contributors in their own communities: parents, teachers, and especially, the newest generation of volleyball coaches.

Throughout his 33 years of coaching, Lokene has never stoped playing competitive volleyball, having a dubious distinction of having won tournaments on every surface, at every division. It is with this continued passion that he finds the ability to push athletes to become the best they can be.
